Last week, I was at Concordia University in Montreal. I met with young filmmaker Jeff Kitchiguine – who, among other, had 2-3 big ideas to share with me around interactivity for the GDP project. He was all about promoting GDP’s films to unusual suspects, groups and individuals outside the documentary beaten track. In a word, [...]

Web documentary: a new age for photography
Photo essay extract by Liam Maloney soon on-line.
Since the beginning of the project, it seemed to me essential to be able to document the impact of the economic crisis outside of major Canadian centres. Since we couldn’t afford to send filmmakers out to every remote community of the country during the course of the year, [...]

From one great depression to another
As it happens, I did some marketing work on The Dark Years back in 2007 when it was released. So it’s strange and interesting to be now working on the GDP project — documenting yet another Great Depression, not as history this time, but as a contemporary event.
Here’s another piece of history on the 1930s [...]

Les deux visages de la crise économique
Caricature publiée sur le site du Syndicat canadien de la fonction publique. The Economic Crisis in Calgary?
I am a filmmaker living and working in Calgary. This has always been my home base, and my hometown. I’ve seen a lot of changes in Calgary over the years from boom to bust to boom. Although I worked for many years on Hollywood productions in location management, I have been making my own films [...]

Move over GDP
That’s the first sentence I read in a news release last week. The news didn’t go out far and wide but it’s actually quite of interest for this project. “Move over GDP” refers to the news that Canada will get a new index to track wellbeing while the NFB’s GDP project will be in full production.
